Grube Maria was a coal mine founded in 1848 by the mining master Eduard Honigmann, the peace judge Friedrich Boelling, and the textile manufacturer Leopold Schoeller in the area of Hoengen. It was named after the wife of the first managing director, Eduard Honigmann. In 1863, the mine was incorporated as Aachen-Höngener Bergwerk-Aktiengesellschaft, initially leased by the Vereinigungsgesellschaft für Steinkohlenbau in the Wurm region from 1878, purchased in 1890, and operated from 1907 through a merger with the Eschweiler Bergwerksverein.
