The estate Muthagen is located on the federal road 221 in Geilenkirchen-Boscheln, south of Schloss Breill. The existing building stock of the facility dates from the 17th to 18th century.
The property was first mentioned in 1292 with Christian von Muthagen. After 1400, it belonged to a Gryn von Aldenhoven, in 1452 to a Thewis von dem Balken, and between 1460 and 1470 to a Seitz von Horrich. The owners in the 16th century were Qurin von Brempt, Franz von Ferken, and Adam von Hochkirchen. In the 17th century, Wallraf von Schaellert and the family von Hülsberg appear as owners. In 1740, Muthagen came into the possession of the Counts von Goltstein, who sold the estate in 1820 to Mr. Fremery from Eupen. Later, a Mr. Meyers is listed as the owner. Around 1873, Muthagen came into the possession of the peace judge and Prussian district administrator Bernhard Paul Friedrich Hugo von Scheibler and his family.
