The Anklam sugar factory has been the only sugar factory in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern since 2007 and is located in Anklam in the district of Vorpommern-Greifswald. The company, which belongs to the Dutch Suiker Unie, processes sugar beets into sugar, bioethanol, biomethane, and animal feed. With 135 employees, approximately 1.4 million tons of sugar beets were processed in the fiscal year 2013, generating a revenue of around 120 million euros.
On January 31, 1883, the Pomeranian Sugar Factory Anklam was founded as a joint-stock company. The sugar beets were delivered by ship via a specially constructed side canal from the Peene River as well as via a factory-owned rail connection.
