Schloss Sommerswalde is located not far from Schwante in the middle of the Schwante Forest in Brandenburg. The main structure of the castle, along with its outbuildings, was built between 1888 and 1891 for the retired lieutenant Friedrich August Richard Sommer by the Berlin architects Hans Abesser and Jürgen Kröger.
Richard Sommer was the heir of the Berlin carpenter and city councilor Carl August Heinrich Sommer, who owned valuable real estate around the Brandenburg Gate. The street on which the Reichstag building was constructed was named after him. The building to the south of the Brandenburg Gate is still known today as Haus Sommer. Until 1891, his son Richard Sommer sold the houses and acquired Schwante Castle with estate management in 1888. Shortly thereafter, he began constructing Schloss Sommerswalde.
