Lünow is located on a slightly elevated ground moraine island on the southern shore of Lake Beetz, a glacial channel lake in the Beetzseera drin, named after it. Lünow is situated in the northeasternmost area of three lake basins of Lake Beetz. Lünow includes the residential area of Grabow as well as the site of the former estate of Müggenburg.
The area around Lünow was proven to be inhabited in the earlier Bronze Age. This is evidenced by findings of arm rings, spearheads, a sickle, an axe, and an arm shoulder. A late Bronze Age urn grave with grave goods as well as Slavic and early German shards were also discovered. The village was first mentioned in a document as "Lunowe" when, in 1335, it was committed along with other villages along Lake Beetz, including Radewege and Butzow, to participate in the maintenance of dikes. Lünow was also mentioned in the land book of Charles IV from 1375.
