The Berlin district of Ahrensfelde, officially Marzahn-Nord, is located in the north of the Marzahn district, in the district of Marzahn-Hellersdorf. The district has more than 25,000 inhabitants.
From the end of the 1970s, a large-scale new construction area was created in Marzahn in East Berlin, where high residential towers were erected according to a prefabricated uniform design and where more than 100,000 people would eventually be housed. The building frenzy was not limited to the territory of Berlin: the new district partly extended beyond the city limits to the municipality of Ahrensfelde. After German reunification, however, a number of border adjustments took place between Berlin and the surrounding federal state of Brandenburg. In October 1990, the new building area in Ahrensfelde was annexed to the German capital and became part of the Marzahn district as Marzahn-Nord. The same happened to a part of Hellersdorf, which previously belonged to the municipality of Hönow. The former city boundary is still clearly recognizable as a green strip, the Seelgraben, which separates Ahrensfelde from the rest of Marzahn.
