The village, which has about 150 inhabitants, is located on an 800-metre-long and 400-metre-wide valley sand island that rises two metres above the rest of the ground, the so-called Kaupe, in the middle of the Spreewald. It is completely surrounded by rivers, such as the Spree and the Leiper Graben. Until the 1960s, Leipe was not connected to the road network and was therefore practically only accessible by water.
The houses of the village are therefore located in an oval on the shore of the island and turn their foreheads towards the water. Anyone who visits Leipe today by land enters the properties from behind. The interior of the island and therefore the centre of the village is not very developed. There is farmland here.
