Ottenhain

Description

Ottenhain is located in the valley of the Krummbach, about five kilometers southeast of Löbau. To the south rises the Sonneberg.

The place was first mentioned in writing in 1317. In a document dated December 3, Margrave Woldemar of Brandenburg assigned eight villages of the Görlitz region, including "Ottenhayn," to the court of the city of Löbau. In the 16th century, Ottenhain belonged to the Gersdorf family and was sold to Heinrich von Miltitz at the end of the century. In 1610, Ottenhain was bought for 7400 thalers by Christoph von Gersdorff. In the 17th century, the village, divided into Upper and Lower Ottenhain, changed owners several times. In 1798, Ottenhain was again divided into two villages and manors until 1853, when the village was united. In 1809, Johann Gottlieb Erdmann von Nostitz purchased the estate of Lower Ottenhain for 42,000 thalers. A new school was built in 1842 after the old one was in extremely poor, cramped condition. From 1844, the road to Niedercunnersdorf was newly designated; it was the same "as long as anyone could remember." The castle-like manor of Lower Ottenhain was built by Christoph Ferdinand Sieland in 1862-63. Overall, the manor of Lower Ottenhain and its surroundings experienced the most renovations and new constructions in the 19th century. The Lower Water Mill burned down for the second time in 1874. In 1890, Ottenhain had 533 inhabitants. The Upper Mill burned down in 1897. The chapel was built in 1899. The last school was built in 1901 and 1906. From 1911, the village was electrified and supplied with electricity from Zittau. After World War II, there were 122 resettlers in Ottenhain. The number of inhabitants was 654 in 1946. In 1957, the first LPG was established, and at the beginning of the 1960s, there were three cooperatives in Ottenhain. In 1973, Ottenhain had 598 inhabitants, 516 in 1984, and 421 in 2013.
