Long-stretched and basalt block sea at Buchschirmküppel near Batten

The Langenstüttig and Basalt Block Sea at Buchschirmküppel near Batten is a nature reserve of approximately 97.5 hectares located in the Hessian municipality of Hilders in the Fulda district. The largest part of the area is designated as a core zone in the Rhön Biosphere Reserve. Furthermore, the nature reserve is situated within the significantly larger EU bird protection area Hessische Rhön. As a result, the areas are part of the European protected area network Natura 2000.
The Langenstüttig and Basalt Block Sea nature reserve at Buchschirmküppel near Batten lies on both sides of the state road 3176, which connects the Hessian municipality of Hilders with the Thuringian municipality of Frankenheim, roughly in the middle between the two places. It was established when, in 2013, the nature reserve Basalt Block Sea at Buchschirmküppel, designated in 1970 northwest of the state road, and the nature reserve Langenstüttig near Batten, designated in 1985 southeast of the state road, were combined into a single protected area. Of the total area of 97.45 hectares, 88.48 hectares belong to the core zone and 7.97 hectares to the maintenance zone in the Rhön Biosphere Reserve.
