The Great Dog's Head is a 824 m above sea level mountain on the Rennsteig in the Thuringian Forest. It is located 3 km south of Stützerbach and only just under 1 km northeast of the Frauenwald district of Allzunah, which lies just below the summit in the Ilm-Kreis, Thuringian Forest.
From the southwest of the Dog's Head, the approximately 8 km long Staudenkopf ridge branches off to the south without any significant valleys in between, bounded to the west by the Nahe and to the east by the Schleuse, with Großen Riesenhaupt near Frauenwald, Schmiedswiesenkopf, and Kaltem Staudenkopf. Separated from this ridge by the Trenkbach, the Rennwegkopf, at 751 m, directly branches off from the Dog's Head to the south, east of Frauenwald.
