The hunting lodge Oberhof is located in the town of Oberhof in the district of Schmalkalden-Meiningen in Thuringia.
As early as 1616, Duke Johann Ernst I. had a hunting lodge built in Oberhof in the Schwarzwald district on the property of a princely house with eight rooms on the “meadow nearby.” The new castle was surrounded by a square rampart. From then on, the Weimar court held large court hunts here twice a year. In 1634, this building burned down. After the Schwarzwald district fell to the newly founded Duchy of Saxony-Gotha in 1640, there were initially no plans for reconstruction. Instead, Duke Ernst I. built a princely house in Oberhof.
