The Schönborn floodplain is a deliberately reclaimed inland island on the Rhine from the 19th century. It is part of a series of islands located in the river Rhine between Mainz and Bingen. The floodplain includes a small garden area and agricultural land. Since early 2013, plans have been implemented to excavate the former old Rhine arm as part of renaturation efforts to reconnect the floodplain with the mainland. These works were successfully completed in November 2015.
