The main cemetery in Limburg an der Lahn, established in 1882, is protected as a whole site under monument protection as the New Cemetery.
After the cathedral cemetery became too small, the New Cemetery was created in 1882. The new layout was made on a rectangular plot of land on the Unterheide at Schafsberg, outside the city. The cemetery was enclosed by a wrought-iron fence. This was removed during World War II. Only the gates of the main portal were preserved. Extensions to the cemetery were made in 1965/66 and 1985.
