The St. Thomas Monastery was the second oldest monastery in Leipzig and continues to have an impact through the tradition of St. Thomas Church, School, and Thomaner Choir to this day.
The monastery was founded as a canonry of the Augustinian order in 1212 by Margrave Dietrich of Meissen. The church, which had already been functioning as a market church for some time, was handed over to the monastery as a collegiate church in 1213. The Nikolaikirche, Georg Hospital, and other properties were also entrusted to the monastery.
