The Nordhausen City Library is a public library run by the city of Nordhausen in Thuringia and serves as an information, cultural, and educational center. It is named after the Nordhausen writer Rudolf Hagelstange and is located in the "Bürgerhaus," which was inaugurated in 2014.
On February 10, 1877, the Nordhausen Public Library was founded by clubs and citizens of the city. A donation from the Jacob Plaut Foundation in 1905 allowed for an expansion. In 1906, the library was moved to the city museum at Friedrich-Wilhelm-Platz, where it reopened in 1907. It was given the name Jacob-Plaut-Public Library, which it retained until 1933. With the year 1934, an unprecedented mobile existence began for the institution, lasting until 1952. The building at Friedrich-Wilhelm-Platz was again needed for educational purposes, and the library moved to Ritterstraße 3. The following years brought further relocations. With the onset of World War II, the library was closed, and the books were stored in the Old Town Hall. In November 1939, however, it was reopened at the initiative of the competent ministry in the "Rosenthal House"; the house was completely destroyed in the air raids on Nordhausen in April 1945, and nearly all 9000 books were lost.
