The Old Rhine (German: Altrhein or Alter Rhein) is an old river course of the Rhine in the German municipality of Kleve that runs from Griethausen to the Bijland Channel. It is also called Griethauser Altrhein. The Old Rhine is approximately eight kilometers long. The Old Rhine was formed after the Saale glaciation and became disused with the construction of the Bijland Channel (between 1773 and 1776). After Griethausen (at 7.5 kilometers), there is a monumental railway bridge of the former railway line Zevenaar - Kleve over the Old Rhine. At Wardhausen (at 5.6 kilometers), the Spoy Canal, which connects the port of Kleve to the Rhine, flows into the Old Rhine. After Griethausen, the water continues as a drainage channel that bends southward along Kellen and then runs eastward along Riswick, originating from various brooks and drainage systems between Warbeyen, Huisberden, and Klomp.
