Description

The Lüneburger Heide Nature Park is located with an area of 1077.92 km² in the north of Lower Saxony. The nature park is supported by the Lüneburger Heide Nature Park region. 90,000 people live in the Lüneburger Heide nature park.

The Lüneburger Heide nature park is part of the Lüneburger Heide holiday region and is located in the city triangle of Hamburg, Bremen and Hanover. It stretches from Buchholz in the northern heath in the north to Soltau in the south and Schneverdingen in the west to the borders of the city of Lüneburg in the east. It comprises parts of the three provinces of Lüneburg, Harburg and Heidekreis. The Lüneburger Heide nature park consists of 35 municipalities. At the heart of the Lüneburger Heide nature park lies the Lüneburger Heide nature reserve (about 234 km²) (also known as the Lüneburger Heide nature reserve). This was identical to the Lüneburger Heide nature park until February 2007 and was one of the smallest nature parks in Germany. The park was expanded four times in February 2007 and now covers 1077.92 km².

Pastor Wilhelm Bode convinced the Naturschutzpark eV (VNP) in 1910 to become active on the Lüneburg Heath. The VNP bought land around the Wilseder Berg. This is how the Lüneburger Heide nature reserve was created. This area was declared a nature reserve by the Prussian government in 1922. Alfred Toepfer, chairman of the VNP since 1954, has increasingly implemented the idea of nature parks in Germany. The Lüneburger Heide nature park became the first nature park in Germany. The VNP initially takes over ownership of the nature park. At the moment, the area of the nature park is still identical to the area of the nature reserve. The Naturparkregion Lüneburger Heide eV association was established in 2006 to take over sponsorship and promote sustainable regional development in the region. A year later, the area of the Lüneburger Heide nature park is expanded fourfold and the sponsorship is taken over by the Lüneburger Heide Nature Park region. The new sponsorship of the Lüneburger Heide eV Nature Park Region Association is responsible for the development of tourism, the improvement of the quality of life and the marketing of regional products of the region through active work with promotion projects.
