In the Münsterland, a farm surrounded by an artificially constructed water ditch, a "moat", is called a "moat farm". Such farms could be well established on the water-retaining clay and loam soils of Münsterland, and therefore occur more frequently. Thus, they represent a typical large-farm settlement form that is clearly traceable to the model of older water castles.
From this perspective, such a moat system served not only to protect the farm but, similar to rural nobility, primarily for representation purposes. For cost reasons, it was only wealthy farmers or those endowed with special rights (sources of income), such as individual Schulzen, who could afford to equip their Schulzenhof with a moat, thereby visibly demonstrating their social status.
Note: The former moat farm Schulze Gaupel is now privately owned and unfortunately cannot be visited.
