Probably the best-known Buldern personality is "Der tolle Bomberg". His real name was Kammerherr and Baron Gisbert Freiherr von Romberg. Born in 1839 and died in 1897 at Buldern Castle, he achieved great fame in the Münsterland region through his coarse lifestyle, his daring pranks and his amorous adventures. He was buried in the old church in Buldern, where his grave can still be visited today. It was not given the name "Der tolle Bomberg" until the 20th century through the bestselling novel of the same name by Josef Winckler (1881-1966), which was published in 1924. Bomberg gained worldwide fame and is put on a par with the "Baron von Münchhausen" and "Till Eulenspiegel".
