The Nauen sugar factory was one of the most significant sugar producers in the Brandenburg region from its founding in 1889 until its closure in 1993.
In 1888, industrialists and large landowners from Nauen decided to establish a joint-stock company for the purpose of building a sugar factory. In October 1889, the factory began operations with 250 employees, and around 750 helpers joined during the harvest season. In its first year of existence, over 31,000 tons of sugar beets were processed at the Nauen sugar factory. In 1893, the factory was also connected to the neighboring town of Ketzin by a railway line. This so-called "beet railway" allowed for a more efficient transport of the beets from the fields to the factory, while Ketzin, located directly on the Havel, served as a transshipment point for the onward transport of the produced raw sugar by water. In 1905, the Nauen sugar factory purchased a competing factory in Ketzin.
