Räsa is located in the Ulstertal valley south of Unterbreizbach on the state road 2604, not far from the federal road 84 and on the former border bypass route of the Ulstertalbahn. The geographical elevation of the place is 240 m above sea level.
The region around Räsa is characterized by potash mining. It is also referred to as the land of the white mountains. This title refers to the prominently visible white spoil heaps of the potash industry near Hattorf and Heringen.
The municipality of Unterbreizbach, and thus also the district of Räsa, was located between 1949 and 1990 in the immediate border area between the GDR and the FRG.
