On June 4, 898, the King of the Lotharingian realm, Zwentibold, granted a salhof in Gleuel along with twelve other farms and the church, as well as properties in Selstena to the Abbey of Essen. Taking today’s measurements into account, the donation encompassed approximately 1000 acres of land.
In later times, it, like the other estates and castles of the lordship of Gleuel, belonged to the Cathedral Chapter of Cologne, which further allocated these lands as feudal holdings. According to the customs of 1567, the borders were as follows: from the boundaries of the estate Horbell to the first house of Bachem, then to the area of Alt-Berrenrath, then along the Burbach stream and Bonnstraße up to the black cross and back to the border of the "lowest" Beller farm. The Schöffen estates included, besides the Burghof, the Schererhof and Hof Zieskoven, all owned by the lord of the castle, Heinrich of Gleuel; the fourth estate in Gleuel, Grippekoven, belonged to the Abbey of Sion, two farms in Sielsdorf, two estates and the monastery farm this side of the Burbach stream, Burg Schallmauer and Hof Schallmauer. Lastly, there was the second farm of Ziskoven, the Melatengut, and the two mill farms. The boundary to Horbell, Bachem, and Alstädten is still marked in the same way on the Tranchot map. Under French rule, the ecclesiastical properties were nationalized and then sold. During the time of the French, Gleuel, with 605 inhabitants including the hamlets, was the largest special municipality of the Mairie/Bürgermeisterei Hürth belonging to the canton of Brühl.
