The church of St. James with its mighty brick towers dominates the image of the village of Oeding, a district of the municipality of Südlohn in the district of Borken in North Rhine-Westphalia.
The first documented mention of Oeding Castle dates back to 1353. To the south of this castle there was a small chapel. A small settlement developed around the castle and the chapel. On February 5, 1675, the first Holy Mass was celebrated in the chapel. Around 1680, the patronage of St. James the Elder was probably transferred to the chapel. In 1839 Oeding became a subsidiary church of St. Vitus in Südlohn and on 25 March 1907 the parish of St. James.
