Karken is a place in the German municipality of Heinsberg, in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, with a population of 3,498. Karken is located close to the Dutch border and just south of the River Rur. The main road from Roermond to Heinsberg runs through the town.
In 1198, Karken was mentioned for the first time in writing as Kerreke. A Giselbertus von Kerreke was then the local lord. In 1591, a massacre occurred by Spanish soldiers against civilians who had sought refuge in the church.
