Schalbruch is a place in the German municipality of Selfkant in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. It is a so-called street village and is located in the northern part of the municipality of Selfkant near the Dutch-German border. Nearby is the nature reserve Hohbruch.
The first mention of the name, Schaltbroich, dates back to 1558. The meaning of the name is probably "marsh where bark was peeled". Schaltbruch belonged to the Duchy of Jülich. The adjacent marsh forest marked the border between the lordships of Valkenburg and Millen. In 1828, Schalbruch had 320 inhabitants and was part of the municipality of Havert. From April 23, 1949, to July 31, 1963, Selfkant, and thus Schalbruch, was under Dutch administration.
