In 1983, local history enthusiasts founded the Sögel Association for Local History and Tourism, which has been known since 1985 as the Sögel Association for Local History (Heimatverein Sögel e.V.). Even at the time of its founding, there was a desire to have its own local historical museum. However, it would take another six years before the first spade was put in the ground on the so-called Fehnwiese pasture.
The local historical association was fortunate that a suitable half-timbered house from the Niemann family in Wettrup near Fürstenau, which was on the demolition list, became available for purchase. The wooden structure and beams of this house date back to 1807, making it more than 200 years old. This wooden construction, a masterpiece of carpentry, was used unchanged in the reconstruction. The community and members of the local historical association collaborated on the rebuilding.
