The nature-close, moisture-influenced deciduous, marsh, and floodplain forest area is the source area of the Breitenbrucher Bach as well as numerous other springs and is surrounded by mostly richly structured and extensively used grassland areas (cultural landscape relics) or traversed by them. Its size is 58.12 ha. The nature reserve is located on the northern edge of the Emscher zone in the far east of the Recklinghausen city area, directly at the border with Castrop-Rauxel, in the intensively agricultural area between Suderwich, Becklem, and Horneburg. It also includes areas that were not part of the original regulation of the Münster district government (1994, approximately 47 ha). This includes the southern wet areas as well as the area of a former, now forested spoil heap in the west of the protected area.
