Discover all benefitsThe route starts at the car park on the main road between Schevenhütte and Düren in the Hürtgen Forest and follows counterclockwise. You could also start from the parking lot of the Friedwald Meroder Wald in the direction of Gürzenich, which saves you one last climb.
It is a direct climb, but not steep, to the summit of the Katzenknipp (Rennweg) on roads closed to car traffic (except forest traffic). Then you descend into the valley of the Roer and cross the dam of the reservoir in Obermaubach. You then cycle through the valley of the Roer, and this can also be done on a dirt road (gravel road) over a distance of about 400 meters. In Zerkall, after driving a short distance on a narrow paved road around a riding school, you will come to the main roads. Soon you switch back to side roads through the Roertal towards the evenings, where it sometimes climbs steeply up and down for a short time (after rainy seasons there may be sand and gravel from the adjacent steep slopes on the road!).
In evenings you cycle past some half-timbered houses and then come on a cycle path along the main road. This is only short (and in a descending direction) and you cycle on side roads to Hausen, where you will see fur sandstone cliffs in Roerdal. After Hausen, there is a longer climb on side roads (Hahnenberg), which initially leads over the cobblestones in the village. The descent is on a fairly good inner road, followed by a main road to Heimbach. Heimbach is a beautiful place with a historic core, but the route leaves Heimbach very quickly and then follows the longest climb of the route (6 km climb) to the Kermeter, a high ridge at just over 500 meters altitude. The descent leads over a main road to Gemünd. And then you leave the main roads again and cycle to Olef.
Now you come to the part of the route with shorter climbs (1.5 to 2 km in length), which is also steeper than the part you have completed. These are successively the climbs of the Wintzener Straße, the Honderberg, the Pferdekopf and the Hubertushof. The ascent of the Honderberg is on moderate road surface (and is steep up to 16% in the forest), but still easy to do in the direction of climbing. The descent from the Hubertus hof to the town of Keldenich has a few hundred metres of poor road surface (July 2022).
Then you will enter a heavily hilly farmland where you will cycle mainly on roads (roads closed to car traffic, with the exception of agricultural traffic). This goes up and down all the time. You won't find a place here at all. Occasionally it also goes through small nature reserves. This area is rather quiet in terms of traffic and due to the open character, it is very possible that you will suddenly see a deer moving through the crops that are grown in the fields. After you have passed Vlatten, you come to a narrow district road with a beautiful view over the Roertal. After the exit, you change back to farm roads, where a single road has slightly worse road surfaces (namely at Berg-Thuir and just before Thum). After passing the town of Boich, you descend to the Roer Valley, followed by an ascent on farm roads on the west side of the Roer between fruit trees.
Then you cycle again through farmland and also a little more often through villages that are now a little larger than before. In Birgel you cycle past the castle. From Gürzenich follows the not difficult final climb through wooded area on a main road with little traffic to the parking lot in the Hürtgen Forest.
