Follow the fruits on the Oderbruchbahn cycle path - tour for late riser

Where the old Oderbruchbahn ran over 100 years ago, you cycle off the beaten track through the vast landscape of fields, meadows and lakes. In addition to idyllic gems and villages that you will discover, it is above all the many fruit trees and berry bushes along the way that inspire and invite you to taste them at harvest time.

Start in Müncheberg
The regional train will quickly get you out of town and to the pretty Müncheberg train station. You are traveling on the former Royal Prussian Eastern Railway, as the information boards at the train station tell you. Most of the day trippers head towards Buckow and Märkische Schweiz from here. You, on the other hand, decide against the current and follow the signs with the green railway line and blue ribbon. The old Oderbruch Railway took off over 100 years ago. Until the middle of the 90s it twitched through the country, here in Müncheberg for the last time in 1964. Today one of the most beautiful bike paths runs along the old route east of Berlin.
Before you go into the town center, you can take a look at the beautiful Schlagenthinsee. Then you cycle past the Leibniz Institute for Agricultural Landscape Research. During the week you have the opportunity to pick apples, pears, apricots, cherries, etc. Also take a look at the old brick fortifications and the old city wall with the two city gates. You can climb the tower of the mighty parish church and get an overview of the place and the gentle hilly landscape that you will cycle to the south.

Far from cars and noise
The solitary cycle path, lined with old linden trees, chestnuts and protective hedges, leads you across the fields to an estate and village that is well worth seeing. Old agricultural implements are exhibited around the Behlendorfer Schinkelhof. The manor with its octagonal floor plan was designed around 1800 based on English models. The field stone look underlines the rural ambience perfectly.
At the end of the village the idyllic Heinersdorfer See opens up. You should linger here for a moment to enjoy the beautiful view. Even in midsummer there is hardly anything going on at the small lido. The bike path meanders along the shore. A jetty, almost invisible in the reeds, calls softly to Instagram and a photo. There are also some apple trees and many blackberries right on the way.
In the small Heinersdorf you will be welcomed by the “Alte Schmiede” inn, which is ideal for a break. In sunny weather there are homemade (apple) cakes and homemade ice cream on the terrace. The nearby funny stork tower with mailbox also accepts orders and requests. The eyrie is usually occupied by storks from March to August.

Old varieties
It continues on the beautiful bike path avenue and in the distance the Rauener Mountains greet you. At harvest time, the brightly colored cherry plums along the roadside light up again and again, which you can of course try. The trees can barely hold the many fruits and the low-hanging branches force you here and there to take a fun winding ride. Do you want more fruit? Then we recommend a detour to Tempelberg, about 4 km away, where the oldest apple tree avenue in Brandenburg is located west of the village on a sandy path. In the past 200 years, 80 different and now particularly old apple varieties have been planted there, which are now gnarled and crooked to defy the weather.

The Oderbruchbahnradweg splits in Hasenfelde. The main axis continues to the northeast and to Wriezen, but you follow the route to Fürstenwalde. Elaborately designed information boards tell of the former railway, which was the lifeline of the region for more than half a century and connected the small and large towns of the Oderbruch with the metropolis of Berlin.

Stylish in Steinhöfel
When you arrive in Steinhöfel, you should definitely plan a stop at the castle. With its park in the English style, it is one of the most beautiful aristocratic residences in the Mark Brandenburg. The extensive park offers beautiful lines of sight and views of meadows, old trees and the pond. Take a break on the beautiful bench under the large oak tree or explore the Steinhöfel garden. This is looked after by an association and is accessible from May to October. Apple trees with old varieties are lovingly preserved here. Logically, you can get fresh apple pie here in season. You can try the regional varieties either in the castle's café or in the old office building Steinhöfel with a small gallery.

To the cathedral city of Fürstenwalde
The last section of your late riser tour is again idyllic. The wheels roll almost as if by themselves on the good surface. The trees surrounding the cycle path make the ride in the partial shade pleasant, especially in summer. Sometimes you think that you are driving through a green tunnel. Here, too, you will find plenty of plums and mirabelle plums, which are ready for harvest from August to September.
Last but not least, you come to the cathedral city of Fürstenwalde. Before you get on the RE1, it is worth taking a short excursion to the medieval old town and the Spreeuferpark. The Fürstenwalder Dom St. Marien with its 68 m high tower can be seen from afar and is the symbol of the city. Around the imposing building you can end the day and your tour in a relaxed way in one of the cafés and restaurants.

We recommend driving the tour in the direction described.
