The Teufelsburg. It towers proudly and majestically over the Saar valley. Situated on a foothill of the Saargau plateau, the castle that gave our tour its name was primarily used to secure the traffic routes in the middle Saar valley.

Built around 1400, Neufelsberg Castle, popularly known as Teufelsburg, can be seen from afar. Today, it is a tourist attraction from whose castle plateau, once reached, you have the most beautiful view of the Saarland. Not only does the Saar valley stretch out before you, on clear days you can even see as far as the Schaumberg 30 km away.

On roads with little traffic, heading west, where Lorraine is not far away, we cycle over gently rolling hills. The border between Germany and France runs here on the "Gau". The villages here are called Kerlingen or Düren, where the Moselle-Franconian dialect, a mixture of German and Lorraine, is still spoken today and is so typical of our border region. Leidingen is also very close to our route. Here you can walk with one foot in France and the other in Germany, as the border runs through the middle of the village street. The route reaches another highlight in Gisingen. Here, Haus Saargau awaits visitors with rustic charm and elegant furnishings. Haus Saargau is a prime example of a unique type of building that can only be found in our border region. These so-called Lorraine farmhouses are large single-family houses in which the living and working quarters, people and animals were united under one roof. The farm garden, which is part of the nationally renowned "Gardens without Borders" project, delights visitors with a variety of medicinal plants and culinary herbs and is a popular resting place for hikers and cyclists (opening times of Haus Saargau: Sunday - Wednesday 2 - 5 pm, Thu - Fri 10 am - 12 noon). The area around Oberlimberg is no less steeped in history. Here, striking mounds not far from our route bear witness to Celtic ramparts. These structures, popularly known as "Schwedenschanzen", are ditch and rampart systems that sealed off the Limberg spur, which experienced cyclists can climb by bike.
