Description

The starting point of the canoe tour on the Elbe is the Steinhafen in Pretzien. There is the possibility to park with a car here. Your own boat can be launched here. It is also possible to rent a canoe or start guided tours. Right at the beginning, we see the technical monument Pretziener Wehr. The old Elbe arm meanders towards the Elbe for about 2 km.

• Exit to the Elbe at Elbe km 300.8 (downstream)
• Use one of the sandy groynes for a short break
• You pass by the small village of Glinde.

A freighter built in 1939, hit and sunk during the attack on Magdeburg in the war, was completely rebuilt in 1990 and now serves as an individual hotel with a modern look.

• Elbe km 312 - Schönebeck - Riverside Promenade

City of Schönebeck with the impressive riverside promenade - former salt storage buildings have been converted into attractive residential buildings. Salt Flower - 16 meters high, 12 meters wide, and 25 tons heavy Salt Flower that is meant to remind of Schönebecks tradition as a place of salt extraction and trade. It stands on a 170-ton foundation and was unveiled in 1997.

• Elbe km 318 - small ferry
• Elbe km 325.5 - lifting bridge

At km 325, we first paddle through the Sternbrücke, which was put into operation in 2005, before shortly afterwards reaching the lifting bridge at km 325.5, a technical monument. It is Magdeburgs first railway bridge and at the same time one of the oldest and largest lifting bridges ever.

• Elbe km 326 - Magdeburg Cathedral

You should keep to the right, as on the left is the cathedral rock up to the middle of the Elbe, and depending on the water level, passage here can be somewhat problematic. Due to shipping, there are slightly more waves here than usual.

• Elbe-km 327 - Petriförder - White Fleet landing stage
• Elbe km 330 - Herrenkrugbrücke

The Herrenkrugbrücke was built from 1996 to 1999 and handed over on the occasion of the Federal Garden Show. It provides a connection over the Elbe to Herrenkrugpark with the racecourse for pedestrians and cyclists and is 470 meters long.

Behavior at the ferry

As the name suggests, the ferry yaws over the Elbe on a long steel cable, taking advantage of the flow of the river and its bend to travel from shore to shore. Since such ferries are now rarely found, many are unclear about how the ferry works and how the boat operators should behave. In general: The ferry has its permanent mooring seen in the flow direction on the right bank of the Elbe. Once the ferry is moored there, boats can pass the Elbe at this point unhindered. If the ferry crosses or is moored on the left bank in the flow direction, the steel cable spans the entire river - in this case, the fairway is blocked. This can be recognized by the yellow buoys attached to the yaw cable. If the waterway is closed due to the ferry crossing, all other watercraft must wait in front of the ferry. (SZ/tmo)
