Along the Börde-Hamster cycle path, you can enjoy the vast landscape with views stretching to the horizon – no forest or mountain blocks the view -, the typical Börde villages with large farmsteads enclosed by high walls and gates, some mills and the large churches, as Börde farmers were wealthy. But there are also treasures to admire, such as the village of Wespen with its wooden church. The path is connected to the Elbe Cycle Path in Schönebeck and Barby, and the Saale Cycle Path in Barby and Calbe. You can visit the saltwater bath Bad Salzelmen, the Museum for Mineral Exploration in Eickendorf, the local museum in Calbe, or enjoy a refreshing break at Seepark Barby. A head covering is recommended for hot days, as shade is a rare commodity in this landscape.

Route: Schönebeck-Bad-Salzelmen-Eickendorf-Großmühlingen-Kleinmühlingen-Zens-Calbe-Wespen-Barby-Pömmelte-Glinde-Schönebeck
Visit the salt-influenced city of Schönebeck. The beginnings of salt production date back to the 12th century. Starting from the Pfännerschaft in Groß Salze and the village of Elmen, Schönebeck gained great importance through salt production and shipping. With the establishment of the health resort in Bad Salzelmen in 1802, a new chapter in the citys history began. Be inspired by the sights and cultural events. Explore the old town with its historic market, the riverside promenade, and the citys churches, and take a break in Bad Salzelmen. Visit the Saltland Museum, St. Johanniskirche, and the spa park with a wide range of health and wellness offerings, as well as many cultural highlights.
If you continue along the Börde-Hamster cycle tour, you will reach the villages of the Magdeburger Börde. Over 1000 years ago, this region was populated by Slavs and was first mentioned in writing during the reign of Otto I. Productive soil, consisting of fertile black earth and loess, has always brought high yields of grain, beets, and potatoes into the farmers barns.
In the Börde, members of local associations maintain various agricultural traditions. In several villages, ring riding competitions are held on summer weekends, where riders demonstrate their horsemanship. Small museums focus on the Peace Race, old vehicles, and the 1934 mineral exploration. Local festivals are celebrated, and items collected in local heritage rooms tell stories of days gone by. When leaving the villages towards the Saale, the city of Calbe is the next stop.
Located on a trade route and a crossing over the river, Calbe was granted market rights as early as 1160. Despite this, residents lived for many centuries from vegetable cultivation. Onions are still predominantly grown in this area. Today, the city is evolving into a green oasis. Wartenberg with its animal enclosures, an excursion restaurant, and the Bismarck Tower, as well as the Green Lung, are popular destinations for the people of Calbe and their guests. While strolling through the city, starting from the market square, you can take a tour of the various sights. Information panels at each viewpoint provide information to tourists.
Passing through Wespen - known for the wooden church - you reach the city of Barby at the confluence of the Elbe and Saale rivers. The medieval town center, characterized by the Baroque castle, the churches of St. Johannis and St. Marien, as well as larger parts of the former city fortifications, are well preserved despite constant threats from history and the Elbe River. The city wall as a section of the flood protection system was extensively renovated after the 2002 flood. Today, you can once again enjoy the historical ambiance of the city and the nature along the Elbe and Saale rivers without interruption. A new leisure facility is the Seepark. A bathing lake with sunbathing area and playground, as well as catering establishments, invite you to linger. Other places on the way back to the starting point of the bike tour are Pömmelte and Glinde. Experience a landscape with orchards, expansive fields, and small village churches - rural idyll awaits you here. A visit to the Glinde Goat Farm and the Candlemas Museum round off the bike tour at the end. The cycle path leads back to Schönebeck along the Elbe dyke.
Indulge in the local cuisine in the gastronomic establishments along the way and enjoy regional dishes. Why not try Gehacktesstippe, Pottsuse, Magdeburger Bötel, Kirschklump, or other typical Börde dishes.
