The Oderbruchbahn Cycle Path was something of the region´s lifeline for more than half a century. The first groundbreaking ceremony took place in 1910 and the first line went into operation just one year later. There were over 40 stations on the total of 111 kilometers of the Oderbruchbahn. It connected the small and large towns of the Oderbruch (former marshland) and at the same time it offered connections to the large metropolis of Berlin. The trains mainly transported the products of the farmers as well as the products of the sugar and starch factories to Berlin. The last train on the Oderbuchbahn rolled between Dolgelin and Seelow in 1994. The other sections of the route were closed in the 1960s and 1970s. Today the Oderbruchbahn Cycle Path leads through the quiet landscape of the Oderbruch.
The Oderbruchbahn Cycle Path runs along some of the old, abandoned railway tracks from Fürstenwalde and Müncheberg to Wriezen through the striking natural landscape of the Oderbruch (former marshland). The cycle path conveys a unique charm with its rural character, passing through fields, meadows and villages typical of the Oderbruch area where many artists and craftspeople have settled. A visit to Steinhöfel Castle, Kunstspeicher Friedersdorf art gallery or the memorial at the Seelow Heights along the route is highly recommended. But also the “Children of Golzow” exhibition, the shoe museum in Groß Neuendorf, the old malt factory in Wriezen and the stork museum in Altgaul are interesting sights.
By the way: because earlier the passengers threw their apple scraps out of the window during the journey, there are so many apple trees along the way.
