The term Soratfeld is derived from the Middle High German word "sor" = "barren" "dry" or "poor". Thus, the agricultural use of the Soratfeld mainly consists of growing cereals. However, the barren highland has now become fertile land for energy generation. One of the largest onshore wind farms in Europe and shapes the landscape north of Lichtenau. Surrounding the Soratfeld is a charming valley landscape with diverse flora and fauna, in contrast to the barren highland.
