Biberach is a town with centuries of history. Markets, towers and the magnificent merchants' houses characterize the beautifully preserved former imperial city. On this city tour, we will show you hidden corners and historical treasures.
The tour starts at the Old and New Town Halls, the Old Town Hall used to house the butchers' sales hall on the first floor and the council chamber and office in the upper rooms. In the New Town Hall, the bakers had their shops on the first floor and the upstairs rooms housed the offices and the weavers' showroom. Today, the Old and New Town Halls are connected and house parts of the administration. The route leads across the market square past the donkey monument, which was financed by donations in 2000, to the cloverleaf house, from which it takes its name. This mighty house was the headquarters of the Biberach trading company Weishaupt. The route then continues to the parish church of St. Martin, which is used by both denominations and is the oldest simultaneous church in Germany. The route continues along the church square to the last remaining town gate, the Ulm Gate, which has a free-standing bell tower that used to ring out the "Gausappell" to herd the geese in the evening.
Past the Biberach district court and the old post office square, which used to be a Franciscan convent building, the route continues towards Ochsenhauser Hof. This is a former care farm of the Ochsenhausen monastery, which later served as a school building and is now home to a senior citizens' meeting place. Now it's up the steps to the Gigelberg. Once at the top, you can admire the Gigelberg tower and the view over Biberach, from where the "Gigelmann" kept an eye out for fires in the town and rang the storm bells when enemies were approaching. It continues via the Hochwacht to the White Tower, which was built in 1484 as a watch and defense tower and was converted into a prison in the 19th century for the members of the Black Veri band of robbers who were up to mischief in Biberach.
About the Weberberg, the former weavers' guild settlement with elaborate half-timbered houses where barchent, a blended fabric made of linen and cotton, was produced. At the main end of the market square you come out at the Holzmarkt, where there are some remarkable buildings. After looking at the buildings, you continue on to a piece of nature in Biberach, the nature trail along the Ratzengraben, which was once used to rot the flax for the weaving trade, and today the renaturalized stream invites you to linger.
Continue through the beautiful Wieland Park past the Wieland Museum, which is located in the original garden house of the poet Christoph Martin Wieland. Past the town library, you reach the Komödienhaus, where the slaughterhouse used to be located on the first floor and theater was performed on the upper floor, where the German premiere of Shakespeare's play "The Tempest" took place under the direction of Christoph Martin Wieland. Finally, you pass the buildings of the Hospital zum Heiligen Geist, which now house the Biberach Museum. A few more meters and you are back at the starting point of the tour.</p
