The beginnings of the water castle Haus Graven date back to the 13th century. The "Motte Schwanenmühle", which is only a few hundred meters away, is certainly the predecessor building of Haus Graven. After its destruction in the Thirty Years' War, the water castle was rebuilt in its current form in 1656.
Extensive renovations and conversion into residential purposes took place in 1995. In 2010, the city of Langenfeld rented the water castle and handed it over to the association "Wasserburg Haus Graven e.V." for cultural use.
