When hiking through Grasellenbach-Hammelbach, it is worth taking a short tour of the Gothic chapel ruins from the 14th century. Opposite the ruins are the remains of a former prison. On leaving the village, the spring trail leads past the Weschnitz spring, which gave the Weschnitz valley its name. The spring was mentioned as "Wisgoz" in the Lorsch Codex as early as 795. From the following hill (470 m), there is a beautiful view back to Grasellenbach-Hammelbach and to the north-west into the Weschnitz valley and Lindenfels. The "Eselstein" natural monument in the forest, a huge granite formation, is impressive. It is soon followed by the "Brandschneiderkreuz" cross, in the immediate vicinity of which witches are said to have met to dance on Walpurgis Night at Fahrenbacher Kopf (529 m). The tranquil character of the landscape differs significantly from that of the Tromm, the highest part of the Überwald.
Way description:
From the parking lot at the town hall in Hammelbach, the spring trail marked with the sign "H10" leads through the historic center of the village past the small Protestant church. Keep right behind the church and the cemetery, then turn left and leave the village. The path leads past the Weschnitz spring to a hill (470 m). The hiking trail leads into the forest and runs around the granite formation of the "Eselstein". We then leave the forest and walk downhill to a farmstead (Altlechtern). The path climbs again until we leave the forest behind us and reach the plateau above Hammelbach. At a fork in the path, we follow the "H10" to the right, which takes us up to the Trommer Höhenzug (Wagenberg 536 m). Turn left and walk along a beautiful forest path to the Brandschneider cross. The route follows a well-maintained forest path for a few meters and then turns off to the right. We now reach the spring-filled "Hintere Wiesental" valley via a gently sloping path. We walk along the edge of the forest down the valley and reach Litzelbach. We pass the small village on the asphalted local road and turn right at the end of the village. Over a hilltop we reach an idyllic valley, cross the Hammelbach stream at the "Ochsentränke" and walk slightly uphill to the interesting Litzelbach quarries hidden in the forest. After crossing the country road and the Hammelbach stream at the road junction, we continue on the H10 along the edge of the forest until we reach Hammelbach again. At the swimming pool, we turn right and then left again until we reach the starting point of our hike.
