Discover a section of the Weser Cycle Path as a circular route on the main and alternative routes. You can switch sides of the Weser multiple times and determine the length of your bike tour yourself.
Sights along the route: Old Town Hoya with St. Martin's Church and former Count's Castle, Wolfcenter Dörverden, Weserwehr Dörverden, Old Town with Verden Cathedral, German Horse Museum, Canon's House, Weser passenger ship transportation
The city of Verden (Aller) at the confluence of the Aller and Weser rivers is a suitable starting and ending point for the circular tour between Verden and Hoya. The cityscape of Verden is characterized by the towering cathedral (1290 - 1490) - Gothic architecture with the first ambulatory choir in Germany.
Visitors can trace the city's development from the Norderstadt (citizen's city) and Süderstadt (episcopal city) on a city model from 1663 at the Canon's House - Historical Museum. Of regional importance in the museum is the depiction of a hunting scene on an elephant 120,000 years ago.
How big was the horse 50 million years ago? Visitors to the German Horse Museum, located just behind the cathedral, can discover interesting facts about horses in culture, history, art, or sports. From Verden, the route leads across the Aller River into the so-called Aller-Weser Triangle. At Rieda, you reach the Weser for the first time. The cycle path runs parallel to the lock canal between Geestefeld and Stedorf.
It is possible to cross the lock canal (open from April 25 to October 15). You will reach the weir system and the Dörverden hydroelectric power plant. A visit to the lock system is worthwhile.
If you decide to ride the entire circular route, the path leads over a narrow concrete bridge on the Weser dike into the village of Dörverden. The backdrop of the village is characterized by the windmill and the church tower. From Dörverden, the path leads to Barme. From a distance, a radio tower called "Barmer Asparagus" is already visible.
In Barme, the Wolfcenter Dörverden is a worthwhile destination. Here, information is provided on the topic of "The return of the wolf to Germany and Lower Saxony." Various wolf packs, guided tours, and a museum are offered.
The route continues along the B215 towards the south. Before reaching the town sign of Hassel, turn right onto Jübberweg. You will then reach State Road 330, which leads you directly to Hoya. A small detour to the Alhuser Ahe landscape conservation area is recommended. The old Count's town of Hoya invites you to visit the cultural center of St. Martin's Church.
A worthwhile detour is to the three kilometers distant village of Bücken with the double-towered collegiate church of St. Matemiani et St. Nicolai, which is known beyond the borders for its remarkable wealth of important art treasures. From Hoya, the path leads past idyllic Kolken through the municipality of Hilgermissen with its various districts, where cozy pubs invite you to linger. From Wienbergen, you reach the weir and the Döverden hydroelectric power plant. When riding the entire circular route, take a break at Alveser See in Eitzendorf. It's definitely worth it! This old arm of the Weser stretches idyllically over several kilometers and is designated as a landscape conservation area.
Next, you reach the village of Oiste, first mentioned in writing in 860. From Oiste, the path leads to Blender. Blender See is part of the old Weser riverbed. Blender was first mentioned in writing in 1186. Through Varste, you reach the Weser bridge at Hutbergen. Shortly after the village, you once again have the historical backdrop of the city of Verden (Aller) in front of you.
