The present-day city of Wolfenbüttel owes its name to the former water castle of the same name. The settlement area around the Wolfenbüttel Castle, the district around the still-standing Residenzschloss, was later named Dammfestung after a dam that had been built in the marshy area of the Oker River around the castle. This Dammfestung, as well as the various districts of the Old and New Heinrichstadt, the Auguststadt and the present-day Juliusstadt, which together with the Dammfestung have borne the city name Wolfenbüttel since 1747, were separated and flowed through artificially created arms of the Oker river. Nowadays, with few exceptions, these Wolfenbüttel waterways no longer exist. A signposted tour is intended to help clarify the former location and shape of the moats and canals in the city area.
