The path leads in the first stage via Moers-Asberg and Schwafheim further to the Rhine. From there it goes back to Asberg via the Duisburg districts of Asterlagen and Winkelhausen. Around 2000 years ago, the Romans founded a military camp here. During this time, the Rhine formed the border between the Roman Empire in the west and the free Germanic tribes in the east. To guard this border, the Romans built a fortress in 16 BC on an old arm of the Rhine, which lasted about 100 years: Asciburgium. The camp included a village, a harbor, and burial grounds. History Station No. 31 on Winkelhauser Straße provides information about the fortress Asciburgium and the archaeological finds.
