Short tour up and around the highest mountain in the Swabian Alb
The scenic superlatives of the Donaubergland include ten mountains, hills and ridges, all of which break the thousand-meter mark. The leader in this highest part of the Heuberg natural area, known as the "region of 10 thousand meters", is the Lemberg near Gosheim, which at 1,015 meters is also the highest mountain in the Swabian Alb.From a distance, the wooded elevations on the Albtrauf and on the Alb plateau look quite inconspicuous, but the "roof of the Alb" has it all. This includes the Lemberg circular trail, which is ideal for a short Sunday excursion or a longer evening walk: It goes up and down again. As a "witness mountain", the Lemberg is not as free and isolated as the Hohenkarpfen near Hausen ob Verena or the Hohenlupfen near Talheim - but the great view always makes up for this.
The 120-year-old "Eiffel Tower of the Alb" sits enthroned on the summit. To climb its 152 steps, you'd better be free from giddiness, as the rather airy steel construction starts to sway slightly in the wind. With children, however, the climb is an absolute experience. Once at the top, a spectacular all-round and distant view awaits, even as far as the Swiss Alps in ideal weather conditions. Boards on the railings provide information about the visible mountains all around.
At the foot of the Lembergturm tower, the barbecue area invites you to sizzle delicacies around the campfire and next to it, the refuge of the Swabian Albverein invites you to stop for a bite to eat on numerous Sundays throughout the year (please inform us in advance). The rustic snack with the hut landlady at the highest point of the Swabian Alb is a very special highlight. This local circular hike is emblematic of the many years of voluntary work and maintenance of hiking trails by the Swabian Alb Association in cooperation with the municipalities, especially here in the Heuberg-Baar-Gau region. On the way back, the tour leads past an impressive natural monument, or rather what was left of it by lightning several years ago: the Gosheim "miracle spruce". At least the remains of the trunk and some pictures give an idea of the former dimensions of the once much admired tree
