Sauerland: Scenic Hike
The trail consists of two routes, each about 16 kilometers long.
The southern route (marked with a red "KW") leads through the Meschede districts of Wehrstapel and Heinrichsthal. The route goes over two mountains, each with 100 to 200 meters in altitude. In a shorter section above Wehrstapel, the path is not developed. Nine impulses invite you to reflect on your own life path. They deal with topics such as mobility, preservation of creation, taking responsibility, encountering the new and foreign, or our dreams and visions. Ideally, both routes can be combined with an overnight stay in one of the monasteries and attending the local services or prayer times in the morning and evening.
The spiritual hiking trail from Bergkloster Bestwig to Abtei Königsmünster mostly follows well-developed paths, but partly also leads through more original and wilder sections. From Ostenberg, there is a magnificent view into the Ruhrtal valley. Attractions along the way are the Veledahöhle in Velmede, the art culture Kantenköppe in Wehrstapel, and the ruins of Hünenburg near Meschede. On this route, there is only a place to stop in Wehrstapel at certain times.

The trail is marked with the logo "KW" on a red background. The starting point of the route is at the main entrance of Bergkloster Bestwig. From here, always follow the sign "KW".

While the northern route of the spiritual hiking trail leads from monastery to monastery through Eversberg and Föckinghausen via well-developed hiking trails, the southern route described here via Ostenberg and Wehrstapel is more demanding in terms of terrain. Here, the paths are often narrower, more secluded, and quieter. Both routes have their own charm. Christmas tree plantations, a sawn-off power pole, the art sculpture "Kantenköppe" in Wehrstapel, or the old Hünenburg (wall structure) in Meschede invite reflection on our own lives: our relationship with the environment, encounter with strangers, or our relationship with life and death. A visit to the Veleda Cave is also attractive, but is only possible at certain times or by appointment for groups. At this place, we follow the example of St. Benedict, who temporarily withdrew as a hermit into a cave.
