The northern route leads from Passau through the Bavarian Forest National Park and along the border and Arber ridge to Furth im Wald. The route can be divided into seven stages. Stage 1 (Passau - Wegscheid): The first stage of the northern route of the Trans Bayerwald is the ideal introduction to the Bavarian Forest. After the three-river city of Passau, the route quickly leaves the asphalt and runs idyllically along the Erlau river. The typical Trans Bavarian Forest profile begins after approx. 20 km of leisurely cycling. It goes uphill along forest paths and finally along the Aubach stream to the stage finish - the market town of Wegscheid. There are several places to cool off along the route. Cultural monuments of the Bavarian Forest, such as the ceramics museum, the graphite mine and graphite museum or the granite center show the roots of the Bavarian Forest as well as the wooded paths along the streams. Stage 2 (Wegscheid - Waldkirchen): The second stage of the northern route of the Trans Bavarian Forest is varied and, above all, exceptionally scenic. One highlight is the ascent and descent as well as the associated view at Friedrichsberg near Thalberg. From Breitenberg onwards, there is plenty of variety - from beautiful trails and wide views to moderately strenuous forest trails, you will find everything that mountain bikers love here. A short detour to the viewing tower at Oberfrauenwald is particularly beautiful. In the town of Waldkirchen, you can stroll along historical paths in the Goldener Steig museum or relax in the Karoli baths. Stage 3 (Waldkirchen - Mitterfirmiansreut): The third stage of the northern route of the Trans Bayerwald leaves the sawtooth profile behind for the most part. With two longer climbs, this stage can be divided up nicely. The ascent to the Dreisessel is a tough one. However, the breathtaking panoramic views are well worth the effort. There, the route briefly follows the border with views of the Czech Šumava. If you want to cool off after this strenuous stage, you will find suitable natural swimming lakes in Jandelsbrunn and Neureichenau. The border plays a special role on this stage in the border triangle of Bavaria, Bohemia and Upper Austria. This is visited directly at the Dreisessel, and in Haidmühle you can experience the border up close in the KulturLandschaftsMuseum. Stage 4 (Mitterfirmiansreut - Spiegelau): The fourth stage of the northern route of the Trans Bayerwald offers historic cultural landscapes and wild national park forests. The route leads past the Finsterau open-air museum, where historic estates and old livestock breeds can be seen. The route continues along quiet forest paths through the newly emerging forest wilderness in the Bavarian Forest National Park. The Lusen National Park Center with its extensive open-air animal enclosure and treetop walk offers background information on the national park and a variety of insights and views of the landscape and its inhabitants. At your destination of Spiegelau, you can relax and refresh yourself in the natural Kneipp facility near the spa gardens or in the natural outdoor pool. Stage 5 (Spiegelau - Zwieslerwaldhaus): The fifth stage on the northern route of the Trans Bayerwald first runs along the edge of the national park. At Frauenau, the trail leads over a more than 70 m high stone dam. The dam behind it is fed by streams directly from the national park. After Buchenau, the trail heads back into the national park forests. At Scheuereck, the deer enclosure, which is open to visitors in summer, offers the opportunity to get up close and personal with the animals. The nearby Falkenstein National Park Center with its outdoor animal enclosure invites you on a journey back in time - with a stone age cave, aurochs, wild horses etc. The stage ends in Zwieslerwaldhaus . If you would like to spend the night on the summit of the Großer Falkenstein, there is still the approx. 7 km long ascent from Zwieslerwaldhaus with an elevation gain of around 600 meters. Stage 6 (Zwieslerwaldhaus - Lam): On the sixth stage of the northern route of the Trans Bavarian Forest, the route leaves the Bavarian Forest National Park. Before heading up to the king of the Bavarian Forest, the Großer Arber, you should definitely make a detour to the former Trifterklause, the "Schwellhäusl". Despite the strenuous ascent to the Großer Arber, you should not miss the view down into the valley to Bodenmais, the old mining village and only climatic health resort in the Bavarian Forest. The highest peak in the Bavarian Forest offers a phenomenal panoramic view of the Czech Republic, the national park, the eight peaks over a thousand meters high and the Danube plain to the south. In good weather conditions, the Alps are close enough to touch. From here, the route continues at a constant altitude up to the Reischfleck saddle. You can quench your hunger and thirst on a detour to Berghaus Schareben. After refreshments, cross the ridge not far from there and head downhill towards Lamer Winkel. Unique nature and impressive views accompany you all the way to Lohberg. The Huberweiher natural pool awaits you here for a refreshing dip in the cool water. If you want to continue, you can take care of your calves at the stage finish in Lam and recharge your batteries for the next exciting day. Stage 7 (Lam - Furth im Wald): The seventh stage of the northern route of the Trans Bayerwald has it all once again. A long and steep climb to Lam's local mountain, the Osser, and then a constant, energy-sapping uphill and downhill towards the dragon engraving town of Furth im Wald. If time and fitness allow, then you should treat yourself to a detour "Around the Hohenbogen", this circular tour is a real hotspot and, in addition to the physical challenge, offers great views to the Czech Republic or back to the Großer Arber. A stop at the Berghaus Schönblick is a must, the Kaiserschmarrn pancakes there are legendary! Also worth seeing are the remains of the listening posts and military installations from the Cold War era. When you arrive in Furth im Wald, "Fanny" is already waiting for you, the world's largest walking robot and a real star - and also very photogenic. After seven fantastic stages of the northern route, you can review your adventure in the town square, satisfied and in a great mood.
