Description by the author

A round in Münsterland starting from Velen (from Slot Velen). You initially cycle over almost flat land along meadows, through forests, and past Castle Varlar. The terrain sometimes rises almost imperceptibly.
At Castle Varlar, you follow a private road that is open to cyclists (the NRW cycling network also runs along this road). Then you enter the hilly area east of Coesfeld (part of the Baumberge), where about seven climbs await (almost all up to 10%, with two climbs that get a bit steeper). The hilly area is known as Coesfeld-Daruper Heights. You will also cycle past the Gerleve Monastery.

Then it goes back to Velen over almost flat land, with another change between fields and forests. Before you reach Velen, you first head into the hilly area around the town of Reken (Rekener Switzerland or Rekener Mountains), at the edge of the Hohe Mark Nature Park. Here, you ascend the Melchenberg via the hamlet of Bollengraben (a beautiful hollow road through beech forest). West of Reken is a large forest area that you traverse where you also get the ascent of Waterberg for cycling. In this forest area, there is also a dolmen accessible via a field path (follow the signposting to Düwelsteene burial chamber), one and a half kilometers from this route. Then you have just a few kilometers left to Velen, passing by an artesian water spring.

The roads are generally very calm in terms of traffic, except for the main roads (state and federal roads, which also have bike paths). You will cycle a maximum of 3 kilometers on bike paths along the main roads. In some places, the side roads are of somewhat lower quality, but for the most part, the inner roads are of good asphalt quality.
