Description by the author

Duisburg-Bissingheim near the Entenfangsee is a beautiful starting point for a tour through the nearby Bergisches Land between the city triangle of Duisburg - Velbert - Essen. This northern part of the Bergisches Land is also called Niederbergisches Land. You might wonder why you should cycle there. Well, it’s a more surprising area than one might think, with significant relief (not new for the Bergisches Land, by the way) and therefore often steep climbs (up to 22% on this route (Rutherweg)), narrow alleys, and occasionally less well-maintained roads. However, it boasts a beautiful environment, especially around the idyllic Angerbach valley and around the Ruhr valley. By the way, on the roads around the Angerbach valley, one must consider the transverse gutters in the road (so watch out for descents). Sometimes, due to the proximity to the metropolitan area, you have to take one and a half to two kilometers of bicycle path along the federal road for granted (this is the case from Heiligenhaus to Tüschen, shortly before the village of Hösel, at the southernmost point of the route at Niederschwarzbach, and finally in the ascent of Mintarder Berg). The open bike path right along the bank of the Ruhr is nice (it can get crowded on weekends in good weather) and the open bike path on the former railroad track of the Niederbergbahn. Almost at the end of the ride, when you cycle out of the village of Selbeck, you are informed that the road is a bicycle road. Unfortunately, this road is in very poor condition over a length of one kilometer near the passage of a golf course. Surprisingly beautiful is also the forest area right next to Duisburg; one doesn't really feel like being near such a large city.
Compared to what routeyou indicates, the entire route is paved, and the number of elevation meters is about 300 meters more (and this means quite a tough ride despite the low number of kilometers)!

P.S.: The A44 motorway between Ratingen-Ost junction and Heiligenhaus is under construction and will cross the Angerbach valley via a bridge that is already under construction. This may lead to a changed traffic situation on site in the near future. The opening of this last remaining section of the A44 motorway is planned for 2022.
