Description by the author

This route leads over predominantly (quite) quiet roads and climbs about 1800 meters in elevation. A beautiful starting point is the flower and half-timbered village of Sasbachwalden. The route (in a clockwise direction) has the following ascents: 1) Lochwald, a short climb from Lauf over Au towards Neusatz. Part of this ascent goes through the vineyards, offering a view of the ruins of Neuwindeck Castle. 2) Unterstmatt via Neusatz. The first few kilometers feature steep sections of up to 15%. Most of the ascent takes place on the quiet, wide, and well-paved K3765. After the summit, you initially cover a distance of about 3 km over the heavily trafficked Schwarzwald-Hochstraße, especially on weekends, before heading down the very quiet L80b into the valley of the Murg. The L80b has frost damage at various points, but not to a concerning extent. 3) Hornisgrinde-South via Seibelseckle. This is a nice ascent on very quiet roads (except for the 1.5 km over the B500). A section of about 5 km is car-free (from the forest house in Hinterer Langenbach). The forest path is in quite good condition. After this forest path, you reach the heavily traveled B500, which you follow for 1.5 km. Near the Mummelsee, the final part of the ascent follows. This section is closed to motor traffic, dead-end streets, and the steepest (up to 14%) road climbs along the Mummelsee to the observation tower at the top. This part of the road was newly paved in 2014 and is therefore in excellent condition. After descending via the same route, you follow the B500 north for 3 km and then proceed to the next ascent (Hornisgrinde-North). 4) Hornisgrinde-North: The access road to the top of the northern side of the Hornisgrinde massif may be closed with a barrier, but you can bypass it by bike. What follows is a fairly steep climb of 3 km to the notable television tower and the smaller tower behind it. This ascent is also a dead-end, so you must return the same way. The road is in quite good condition. Finally, there is the descent into the Rhine Valley, which is long and steep (many sections with 12%), and the road surface is in very good condition. In the valley of the Murg, you follow the Murgtal cycle path, a separate bike path with good asphalt, to avoid the heavily trafficked federal road (which leads over the other end of Murg) through this valley. If you want to follow the route in reverse (counterclockwise), the challenging climb from Sasbachwalden to the summit of Hornisgrinde-North follows right away. A kilometer-long steep section of 10 - 12% awaits you.
