The painter Jan Van Eyck came to Santiago de Compostela during his trip to Portugal in 1429. He was a member of a Burgundian delegation. Officially, he came to Portugal to paint a portrait of Princess Isabella of Portugal. The ultimate goal was to establish an alliance between Burgundy and Portugal through a marriage between Philip the Good and Isabella. Jan Van Eyck participated in the negotiations for the marriage contract.
