El pintor Jan Van Eyck llegó a Santiago de Compostela durante su viaje a Portugal en 1429. Era miembro de una delegación borgoñona. Oficialmente, llegó a Portugal para pintar un retrato de la princesa Isabel de Portugal. La intención final era que se estableciera una alianza entre Borgoña y Portugal a través de un matrimonio entre Felipe el Bueno e Isabel. Jan Van Eyck participó en las negociaciones del contrato matrimonial.
