It was built between 1393 and 1423 by the constable Don Ruiz López Dávalos. The second count of Benavente gave the fortress as a dowry to his daughter Doña Juana Pimentel, who married Don Álvaro de Luna in 1432. He was executed by King John II in 1453, and from that moment the castle began to be known as the Castle of the Triste Countess. It is a beautiful Gothic castle with a square plan topped by an embattled parapet. It has circular towers at the corners and three solid rectangular towers along the walls.
