Het werd gebouwd tussen 1393 en 1423 door de constable Don Ruiz López Dávalos. De tweede graaf van Benavente gaf de burcht als bruidsschat aan zijn dochter doña Juana Pimentel, die in 1432 met Don Álvaro de Luna trouwde. Deze werd in 1453 ter dood veroordeeld door koning Juan II, en vanaf dat moment begon het kasteel bekend te staan als Kasteel van de Trieste Gravin. Het is een prachtig kasteel in gotische stijl met een vierkante plattegrond, bekroond met een kantelend borstwering. Het heeft ronde torens op de hoeken en drie massieve rechthoekige torens op de muren.
